Founded by Bryon & Wendy Tait
Casco Bay Steel Structures, Inc. founded by Bryon & Wendy Tait. Operations began at 5 Industry Road in South Portland, Maine. Bryon did the fabrication, estimating, and managed the projects. Wendy did the company books once a week while she continued her career in nursing.
1997

First three employees hired
CBSS hired its first three employees including two welders and a quality control manager. These three employees still work for CBSS today! With the company taking off Wendy left her job as a nurse and focused on CBSS full time.
1998

Tait began searching for land to build a new fabrication shop
After outgrowing the space CBSS was currently renting Tait began searching for land to build a new fabrication shop. CBSS continued to grow and bring on additional employees.
1999
Tait began searching for land to build a new fabrication shop
CBSS relocated to a new 17,000 SF facility in Saco, Maine
Construction began and CBSS relocated to a new 17,000 SF facility in Saco, Maine. In addition to the new facility, Tait also purchased new state of the art CNC machinery to process plate and increase productivity. Workforce continued to grow to about 10 employees.
2000

First addition was made to the Saco plant
After being in the new facility for only a year more space was needed and the first addition was made to the Saco plant adding an additional 8,000 SF of production space.
2001

An additional 6 acres were purchased
Two more additions were added to the Saco facility for a combined total of 55,000 SF. An additional 6 acres were purchased for yard storage. Workforce grew to about 20 employees including an estimator and project manager.
2003-2005
An additional 6 acres were purchased
Workforce grew to about 30 employees
CBSS began renting an additional 32,000 SF of fabrication space within 1 Wallace Avenue in South Portland, ME. Workforce grew to about 30 employees.
2009
Workforce grew to about 30 employees
Workforce doubled to 60 employees.
CBSS began renting the entire facility at 1 Wallace Avenue totaling 100,000 SF. 150,000 SF between the two locations. Workforce doubled to 60 employees.
2010
Workforce doubled to 60 employees.
Additional project managers were hired to handle the complex work
CBSS purchased the 1 Wallace Avenue location and moved its office there. Additional project managers were hired to handle the complex work CBSS was taking on.
2012

Workforce continued to grow to about 80 employees
An additional 20,000 SF of fabrication space was added the Wallace Avenue facility. Workforce continued to grow to about 80 employees

CBSS purchased 1 Runway Road property in South Portland, Maine. 12 Acres and rail access for future expansion next to the Wallace Avenue facility.

Casco Bay Steel Structures completes its first movable bridge
CBSS completes its first movable bridge. The Rt. 99 Bascule bridge between Everett and Boston, MA. Workforce grows over 100 employees.

CBSS purchases 4 additional acres
CBSS purchases 4 additional acres and creates direct rail access along the Wallace Avenue facility.
2015

Casco Bay Steel Structures purchases the Megquier & Jones facility at 1156 Broadway
CBSS in South Portland, Maine to add an additional 70,000 SF of fabrication space.
2016

Present Day– CBSS presently has 3 fabrication facilities totaling 250,000 SF
CBSS completes and ships the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge lift span utilizing rail and direct water access. Present Day– CBSS presently has 3 fabrication facilities totaling 250,000 SF of fabrication space on 60 acres of land with 150+ employees producing an annual output of roughly 20,000 tons of fabricated steel.

Casco Bay Steel Structures, Inc. was established in 1997 and has continually grown to meet the needs of bridge projects throughout New England and New York.  Casco Bay Steel Structures, Inc. is an AISC certified bridge fabrication company with fracture critical and sophisticated paint endorsements.  Casco Bay Steel Structures, Inc. is also a member of the national Steel Bridge Alliance.
   
Casco Bay Steel Structures, Inc. has 3 plants, located in Saco and South Portland, Maine, totaling 250,000 sq/ft of fabrication space with 155 tons of lifting capacity on 60 acres of property.
